Do We Have A Problem? features a highly effective, 16-second, 4-bar breakdown outro that functions to wind the song down while simultaneously heightening both memorability and engagement as the song comes to a close.

Bars 1-2

Following the vibrant and powerful third verse, which consists of Nicki’s sung and rapped vocals along with a powerful trap beat and fast-paced synth arpeggio, the outro abruptly shifts to a breakdown arrangement and half-time feel. Here, all of the drums are pulled from the mix save for the kick, which hits in tandem with the bass to maintain some low-end power. Over this, the synth arpeggio that was present throughout the entire song shifts to half time with a higher-pitched, grainier timbre, a switch that was also used in the intro and select portions of the verse. Together, these developments not only provide engaging contrast against the preceding verse, but also put the spotlight on Nicki’s slower rapped vocals and bookend the song in a familiar manner.

Lyrically, Nicki continues the theme from the end of the preceding verse, “gon’ hop out on that ass, ski mask,” with, “Heavy on the ski mask, too. And the ski mask ain’t for the pandemi’. It go with the semi, paid a pretty d**n penny.” In addition to providing cross-section continuity, this lyric also puts the song in tune with current events that make it more relatable.

Bars 3-4

The second half of the outro maintains the slower vibe, but then builds up energy in the last bar with a riser and eighth-note kick drum pattern. The sudden ramp up in energy at the very end leaves the listener anticipating the arrival of another new section but subverts these expectations with an abrupt ending. This build coupled with Minaj’s final shouted lyric, “Ski mask way,” heightens the listener’s engagement and leaves them hanging and eager to repeat the song again.
