In this installment of Technique Tuesday, we dive into the expert rhymes and other lyrical connection accentuators used in Drake featuring J. Cole’s Hot 100 #1 smash, “First Person Shooter.”

In particular, we focus on Drake’s third verse, which is a masterclass in and of itself. The section uses a host of tried-and-true techniques, including a logically unfolding ABBCA end-of-line rhyme scheme; the use of double and triple rhymes; strategically placed internal rhymes; a plethora of alliteration; and repetitive lyrics, all of which ensure that the section fully connects and resonates.
